Consumption

Find here data on electricity consumption in France, in the form of annual and monthly reviews, or more detailed data at weekly and daily granularity. The graphs illustrate current trends and provide a better understanding of the fundamentals of electricity consumption in France, in particular the link with temperatures.

The graph shows trends in average weekly and daily consumption

      • gross
      • Adjusted*

*For the last 12 months, consumption is adjusted to normal temperature. For previous years, consumption is also adjusted for calendar effects.

The aim of these corrections is to provide an assessment of structural changes in consumption.

The data can be of various kinds:

      • Data from RTE meters and distribution network operators. In order to draw up global consumption or production balances, we need to have an aggregated view of all metering data on the transmission and distribution perimeters. These data are only available on the 15th of each month for the month just ended. Although updates are possible for at least 12 months, the consolidated data is very robust from the first date of availability.
      • Provisional data, derived from telemetry set up by network operators at various points on the power grid, supplemented by estimates for non-telemetered production or consumption. Provisional data provide an initial overview, available very quickly after each deadline; they are not of the same quality as metering data (estimates taken into account, less accurate measurement than metering data, etc.). Graph elements based on provisional data are indicated by a specific pictogram on the portal.

This graph presents annual and monthly :

          • gross electricity consumption
          • consumption adjusted for weather effects

Consumption adjusted for weather effects corresponds to the power that would have been consumed if temperatures had been in line with norms for the period. It is calculated every year based on consumption data. This process makes it possible to draw a distinction between variations in consumption that are due to structural trends (demographics, economic activity) or temporary factors (health crisis, energy saving measures, etc.) and those that only reflect variations in temperatures and the temperature-sensitivity of the French power system. For instance, if temperatures are above average during one week in winter, gross consumption (i.e. consumption before adjustments) will be lower than what it would have been at normal temperatures.
